Look for expert help

There are travel agencies in Quito, the capital of Ecuador, which run tours into the Amazon. The Ecuadorians who run these agencies are familiar with the area and already have canoes and tour guides, so they would be ready to bring tourists to your community.

But Agustín suggests turning to an international conservation organization instead. Such an organization would not be as concerned with making a profit as would a travel agency. Conservationists would run the program so it helped preserve the rainforest.

There has been little change land use. Currently about a third of all community land is forested.

There has been little change in income. Currently each household earns about $600 a year.
